About the fellowship and the organiser

The Turku Intersectoral Excellence Scheme 2 (TIES2) is jointly funded by the European Union's Marie Skล‚odowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) COFUND programme and the University of Turku. It sits within the University's Turku Institute for Advanced Studies (TIAS), a research collegium founded in 2008 that funds early- and mid-career academics for three years to carry out self-designed research projects. TIES2 follows the earlier TIES programme (MSCA grant agreement No. , ); TIES2 runs under grant agreement No. ).

TIAS invites applications for seven (7) TIES2 Fellowship positions (job title: Senior Researcher) for three years from 1 September 2027. Fellows are selected through an international call, and projects may be based in any discipline within TIAS' five constituent faculties, including the Faculty of Law. Researchers at risk are encouraged to apply. Selection is on the basis of academic excellence.

Who can apply (including applicants from India)

  • The doctoral degree (including public defence/viva) must be completed by the end of the application period, and no more than eight (8) years before the call deadline of 13 November 2026. Special reasons such as maternity, paternity or parental leave, military or non-military service, a long illness or years of experience outside academia may justify a longer gap and should be highlighted in the CV.
  • The call states: "Applicants can be of any nationality but must meet the MSCA mobility rule." Applicants must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Finland for more than 12 months in the 36 months immediately before the call deadline.
  • The proposal must be based in a discipline within Economics, Education, Humanities, Law or Social Sciences. For law, the applicant selects the Faculty of Law (or Business Law within Turku School of Economics) as the host unit.
  • Applicants already permanently employed by the University of Turku may not apply.
  • Applicants are also expected to have other academic achievements and to show engagement in international academic networks.

The intersectoral project and mandatory secondment

Each Fellow carries out a three-year research project of their own design that must directly concern at least one organisation outside the higher education sector (for example government, business or not-for-profit). Every Fellow must complete a secondment outside higher education lasting a total of three to twelve months, between Month 3 and Month 35 of the fellowship; up to three secondments with more than one organisation are allowed. Secondment hosts may be in Finland or abroad. Fellows keep receiving their University of Turku salary during the secondment. Applicants propose secondment partners in the application and must not have worked for the proposed secondment organisation for more than 12 months in the 36 months before the call deadline.

Role, location and working conditions

  • Full-time positions of 1,612 working hours per year, located at one of the University of Turku campuses; successful candidates must be resident in Finland.
  • Fellows attend regular TIAS meetings and events and contribute to the Institute's academic and social life. Teaching may make up a maximum of 5% of the annual workload, with another 5% for other academic and administrative duties.
  • Support includes a departmental supervisor, a personal mentor, visiting professors, a Professor of Practice and a secondment supervisor, and each Fellow prepares a Personal Career Development Plan.
  • The position has a trial period of six months.

Salary and research funding

  • Salary at requirement level 6 with a pre-estimated personal performance percentage of 17%: current gross salary EUR 4,592 per month, subject to yearly increases.
  • Mobility allowance of around EUR 80 per month, and a family allowance of around EUR 80 per month for eligible Fellows. Both allowances are taxable as part of the salary.
  • Travel costs up to EUR 1,200 per year, research costs up to EUR 3,600 per year, training costs up to EUR 1,200 per year, and innovation funding of up to EUR 6,000 over three years.

Besides the online form, the application must contain seven (7) documents in PDF, in English, Times New Roman 12 pt (footnotes and tables 10 pt), each file named with the applicant's last name and the document title, maximum 10 MB per file:

  • Copy of doctoral certificate (with an official English translation if it is not in English, Finnish or Swedish)
  • Curriculum vitae, maximum 2 pages, on the TIES2 CV template
  • List of publications, maximum 2 pages, marking the 5 most important publications for the research plan
  • Research plan, maximum 25,000 characters without spaces, on the TIES2 research plan template
  • Secondment plan, maximum one page, on the TIES2 template
  • Data management plan, maximum one page
  • Motivation letter, maximum 2 pages, naming the host department and explaining the fit with University of Turku research and its multidisciplinary themes

Any use of AI in preparing the proposal must be reported on the application form. Only one proposal per researcher is considered (the last one submitted).

Selection process

The TIAS Director and TIAS Coordinator check eligibility. Each eligible application is evaluated by three external reviewers appointed by the European Science Foundation, mostly based outside Finland, on Excellence (50%), Impact (30%) and Quality and efficiency of implementation (20%). Proposals scoring at least 60% are considered for funding. The TIES2 Selection Committee selects the seven highest-ranked applicants and keeps a reserve list of ten. Appeals on procedural grounds only go to the TIES2 Redress Committee within one week of the ranking decision.

Call opens 18 Sept 2026

Eligibility feedback 08 Dec 2026

Evaluation and selection begins 01 Jan 2027

Fellowship starts 01 Sept 2027
