Senior Backend Engineer — Mortgage Platform

🏱 Tembohttps://static.whatjobs.com/static/ajCore/img/jobPosting/companyLogo/whatJobs_ob_default.png

At Tembo, we’re building the UK’s leading consumer mortgage platform, helping people buy their first home, remortgage, and move up the property ladder. Home ownership has become increasingly difficult for many people. Through innovative mortgage products, affordability schemes, and savings tools such as our Lifetime ISA and Cash ISA, Tembo helps families who might otherwise be locked out of home ownership. Our platform supports the entire journey, from mortgage discovery through to application submission, alongside savings products that help people build towards buying a home. We’re rated 4.8 on Trustpilot, with thousands of customers whose lives have been changed by getting onto the property ladder. Our biggest challenge this year is scale. We aim to double the number of mortgage cases we submit without doubling the size of our operations team. Achieving that requires us to automate large parts of the mortgage journey through operational tooling, workflow automation, AI, and integrations with lenders and financial partners. The Role We’re looking for a Senior Backend Engineer to build and own systems that power Tembo’s mortgage and savings platform. This is a hands‑on engineering role focused on designing, writing, shipping, and operating production software. You’ll work on complex financial workflows, operational tooling, and integrations with lenders and partners. You’ll work closely with engineering, product, and operations to understand problems, contribute to technical approaches, and turn them into reliable software. You’ll take ownership of the systems you build, from initial design through to production operation and ongoing improvement. We’re looking for someone who can work independently, make sound technical decisions, and collaborate well with others. You’ll contribute to architecture discussions and engineering quality through your own work, code reviews, and pairing. What Engineers at Tembo Build Examples of systems our engineers work on include: AI-assisted mortgage workflow automation that moves cases through lender processes with minimal manual intervention Operational tooling used by Tembo’s case management teams Integrations with lenders, credit agencies, and financial partners Savings infrastructure powering products such as our Cash ISA and Lifetime ISA Automation systems that remove operational bottlenecks throughout the mortgage journey These systems are central to enabling Tembo to scale while maintaining a high-quality customer experience. Examples of Problems We’re Working On Applying AI to automate parts of the mortgage workflow Increasing mortgage case throughput through workflow automation Building internal tools for operations teams managing large numbers of cases Building reliable integrations with lenders and financial institutions Scaling Tembo’s mortgage platform as customer demand grows Ensuring correctness and auditability in savings products handling real customer funds Improving observability and reliability across the platform Evolving existing systems while continuing to deliver product improvements What You’ll Do Design and build backend systems Design, implement, and ship services that power Tembo’s mortgage and savings platform. You’ll write production code throughout the week and take ownership of substantial features and systems. Own systems end-to-end Take responsibility for the systems you work on, including data modelling, implementation, deployment, monitoring, reliability, performance, and ongoing maintenance. Work with engineering and product colleagues to turn customer and business problems into practical technical solutions. Break your work into deliverable pieces, provide pragmatic estimates, and surface uncertainty, risks, and dependencies early. Automate operational workflows Work closely with product and operations teams to understand manual processes and build systems that improve efficiency, accuracy, and customer outcomes. Improve the codebase Improve the structure and maintainability of the code you work on. Make pragmatic decisions about technical debt and choose approaches that balance simplicity, reliability, and delivery speed. Contribute to engineering quality Participate in architecture discussions, code reviews, and pairing. Share your knowledge and help improve our testing, documentation, observability, and approach to operating production systems. What Success Looks Like Within your first 6–12 months, you will likely have: Designed, built, and launched systems that increase mortgage case throughput Delivered automation that removes manual steps from the mortgage workflow Built operational tooling used daily by Tembo’s case management teams Taken ownership of important parts of the mortgage or savings platform Improved the reliability, observability, and maintainability of the services you work on Built a strong understanding of the codebase and effective working relationships across engineering, product, and operations Delivered substantial work while communicating progress, trade-offs, and risks clearly What We’re Looking For We’re looking for an experienced engineer who enjoys building systems, taking ownership, and solving problems with others. You likely have: 5+ years of experience building and operating production backend systems Experience designing, delivering, and owning production systems end-to-end Strong experience with Ruby on Rails or a similar backend framework Experience working with transactional, financial, or operationally critical systems Strong knowledge of data modelling and system design Experience operating services in production, including monitoring, debugging, performance, and reliability The ability to turn ambiguous requirements into practical technical solutions Sound judgement about when to invest in architecture and when to choose a simpler approach The communication skills to work effectively with engineering, product, and operations colleagues We’re particularly interested in engineers who have taken responsibility for how their systems work in production and the outcomes they deliver. Nice to have Experience with payments or financial infrastructure Experience building workflow automation systems Experience applying AI to operational or customer-facing workflows Experience building internal platforms or operational tooling Experience with ledger, reconciliation, or audit-sensitive systems Experience working in a fast-growing startup or scale-up environment This Role Might Not Be the Right Fit If You’re looking to move away from writing production code Your experience is primarily frontend or product-focused full-stack work Most of your backend work has involved straightforward CRUD applications You prefer fully defined implementation tasks over helping determine the solution You haven’t yet had the opportunity to design, deliver, and operate systems end-to-end Our backend platform is primarily built with: Ruby on Rails AWS OpenTelemetry OpenAPI We value strong engineering fundamentals, sound judgement, and system design ability more than experience with any specific technology. Why Join Tembo Your work at Tembo will directly affect how people get onto the property ladder. You’ll work closely with engineering, product, and operations on problems that are central to the company’s growth. You’ll have room to influence technical decisions, own meaningful systems, and see the impact of your work on customers and colleagues. This is an opportunity to stay deeply hands‑on while building software that makes complex financial processes simpler and more reliable. Private health insurance Enhanced parental benefits Birthday day off Annual international team offsite Competitive salary and equity Our Values Find a way We innovate relentlessly to help customers get onto the property ladder. It’s all about the people Customers, colleagues, and partners are at the heart of everything we do. We move quickly, listen to feedback, and evolve constantly. #J-18808-Ljbffr

Python Developer

Remote, UK (one day a month in the office) Up to £80,000 + bonus The company Our client has spent more than 25 years using behavioural science to predict whether the world’s biggest brands’ ads will work. They test ads by measuring how people emotionally respond, and their predictions are checked against real in-market results. They’re now building a brand-new AI platform from the ground up, and they’re growing an in-house product and engineering team to own it. This is an established business making a real shift: from slow enterprise releases to a fast, product-led, AI-native way of building software. The role You’ll be one of the engineers building the backend of the new platform. You’ll sit in a small product team with a Product Manager, a Product Designer and a Team Lead, and help decide what gets built, not just pick up tickets. You’ll be: Designing, building and owning Python backend services, from media upload through async ML processing to delivering insights Designing clean, spec-driven REST APIs for headless frontends, internal teams and customer integrations Building MCP servers so AI agents and tools can plug into the company’s data Engineering through Claude Code every day, and building and sharing the skills, subagents and workflows that make the whole team faster Taking code into production with the testing, observability and reliability that enterprise clients expect Contributing to infrastructure as code on AWS, as the platform moves off its older Azure setup Working with data scientists to get ML models into production, and picking up the ML side as you go Building quick prototypes early to test ideas before the team commits to them What they’re looking for Around 3-6 years of commercial software engineering, with strong backend Python (any framework: Django, FastAPI, Flask) Experience designing and building REST APIs that other people rely on Code you’ve shipped and owned on a live SaaS product Hands-on experience with a major cloud (AWS ideal) Solid database and data modelling skills You already use Claude Code daily and have built your own skills or subagents, and you can explain why you own every line you ship Experience building MCP servers, or a strong understanding of MCP and a real drive to build with it A product engineering background: you’ve worked in cross-functional product teams, not just large enterprise ones Ownership and pace: you’re comfortable framing an ambiguous problem with your team and getting on with it Nice to have Infrastructure as code (Terraform or similar) Async or queue-based processing (Celery, SQS, Kafka) Exposure to ML systems or MLOps Enterprise security and compliance experience Some .NET or C# experience, useful for working around legacy services An interest in advertising and what makes it work What’s on offer Up to £80,000 base Company performance bonus Health insurance and pension Mostly remote across the UK, with one day a month together in the office Education reimbursement and wellbeing perks A greenfield platform and real influence over the product What to include when you apply The team cares much more about what you’ve built and owned than about a list of technologies. Tell them about something you shipped, why it mattered, and how you use AI in the way you engineer. #J-18808-Ljbffr

Work with package owners on practical thresholds and targeted refactoring. Improve development environments, testing, and build and release workflows so engineers and agents can verify changes reliably. Prioritize improvements with engineering teams, support adoption through documentation and onboarding, and measure effectiveness, reliability, and operating costs. Example projects include agents that investigate CI failures, diagnose compatibility and performance regressions, and flag changes that affect package interfaces or architecture. You will choose and refine these workflows with the engineers who use them. Experience Experience building and maintaining developer tools or engineering automation used by others, with strong JavaScript/TypeScript and Node.js skills. Hands-on experience using and integrating AI coding tools or agents, with sound judgment about their limitations, output validation, and human review. Experience with Git, CI/CD, automated testing, and systematic debugging of build, test, or integration failures. Brand and agency teams use Konfidant for consumer optimism intelligence and self-serve insight from more than 22,000 survey questions. The platform is live, and AI is at the heart of what comes next: making rich consumer data something teams can explore in natural language, with Konnie, our AI assistant. Think ChatGPT meets market research. We need a talented engineer to help us build it. The Role We're looking for a Software Developer to join the small, technical team building Konfidant. We call the role Product Engineer: you'll own features from idea to customer, not just the code. It's a systems-level role for a generalist who understands how frontend, backend, databases, caches, cloud resources and deployment all fit together. You'll work across the full stack: the product experiences our customers use every day, AI features built on agent orchestration and vector retrieval, and the infrastructure that ties it all together. We value high-level architectural thinking over knowing every line of code. What You’ll Do Architect and build features end to end across the full stack Own core areas of the platform, and bring Konnie into more of the product Build AI-native features using LLMs, agent orchestration and retrieval over structured and unstructured data Develop and maintain vector embedding search and retrieval systems Work with real survey data at scale (ClickHouse, Qdrant), and notice when a number looks wrong Work with cloud infrastructure, databases and caching layers Take ownership of your feature areas with real autonomy Ship quickly, learn from users and iterateHelp define how we use AI across the product and in how we build it Collaborate closely with our product designer, QA engineer and engineering team to ship quality software What We’re Looking For A proven track record of shipping production software in a professional role, including features you have owned end to end. This isn't an entry-level role, but we care about what you’ve built, not how many years you’ve been doing it Strong systems thinking; you understand how frontend, backend, APIs, databases, caches, queues, CI/CD pipelines and cloud deployment fit together as a whole Experience with some or all of: React, Next.js, Node.js, Prisma ORM, cloud platforms (Azure preferred) Comfortable writing SQL; experience with analytics databases such as ClickHouse is a plus Familiarity with vector databases, embeddings or search infrastructure is a big plus Proficient with AI-assisted development tools (Claude Code, Codex or similar), and rigorous about checking what they produce High agency and self-motivated: you thrive with autonomy and take ownership of your work Comfortable working with designs in Figma Excellent communication skills and fluency in English Based in the UK or Europe, within 2 hours of UK time (GMT/BST), with the right to work where you are based What We Offer Competitive salary: £70k to £90k dependent on experience (€70k to €90k if you are based in Europe) Generous holiday allowance (UK): 28 days plus Bank Holidays and your birthday off! Wide variety of employee benefits (UK): social team, pension, life insurance, income protection, dental plan, EV and cycle to work scheme, eye care and flu vouchers to name a few! Equipment: you’ll receive a fully set-up MacBook Pro and any additional tech required for your work Fully remote with flexible working (option to work from our St Albans office) Opportunity to shape a live product used by leading brands Direct collaboration with a small, technical, experienced team Holiday and benefits marked (UK) apply to UK-based colleagues. If you are based in Europe, you’ll be employed through our employer of record, with holiday and benefits that follow local norms in your country, so they will differ from the UK package. To Apply Send the following to : Your CV A few lines on something you built end to end A few lines on how you use AI-assisted development, and how you check what it produces Links to any relevant work, GitHub or personal projects (if applicable). We’re particularly impressed by candidates who build interesting things in their own time, so if you have side projects, demos or experiments to share, we’d love to see them! Where you are based, and your notice period Hiring Process Intro call: 30 minutes with the hiring manager to get to know each other and make sure we’re a good fit. Take-home challenge: a practical task of about 1 to 2 hours, completed with Claude Code, Codex or your agentic coding tool of choice. We want to see how you work with AI-assisted development in practice, including how you check its output. If you don’t have access to these tools, we’ll provide it for the task. Technical interview: a conversation about what you built and why, a small change we make together, your experience and your motivation for the role. This is also your chance to ask us anything. Team conversation: meet some of the wider team, who you’ll work with every day. References and offer. We aim to give you a decision within three working days of your final conversation. Questions? You’ll work closely with development, platform, and security teams to improve deployment velocity, system reliability, and operational visibility.
